Why early support matters

When a small financial problem becomes a crisis

Tax returns, HMRC correspondence, Universal Credit calculations, household bills and official letters can cause considerable anxiety. When information is hard to understand, it can be difficult to know what to do next.

Who we support

Financial support should be understandable and accessible to everyone.

Purple Elm aims to reach people who may struggle to access conventional professional support — including people experiencing hardship, low confidence with numbers, digital exclusion, social isolation or difficulty with official correspondence.

We have a particular interest in reaching seldom-heard communities, including South Asian and Muslim communities, while being inclusive and welcoming of eligible people from all backgrounds.

Who we support

Learn together

Community workshops that make money matters feel more manageable

Friendly sessions using plain English and accessible examples — from budgeting with confidence to understanding HMRC letters and financial services online.

Cost-of-living pressures

More pressure can make ordinary problems harder to manage

Increased household costs can make existing financial difficulties more difficult to manage. An unexpected tax issue, benefit query, missed deadline or misunderstood letter can create additional stress.

Purple Elm aims to provide accessible early support so people can better understand their situation and identify appropriate next steps.

Shaped with our community

We started by listening.

Through initial community conversations, Purple Elm heard from approximately 130 people about financial worries and the support that could make a difference.

01

Financial literacy

Community conversations highlighted a need for clearer, more accessible information about everyday financial matters.

02

Affordability

The cost of professional support was identified as an important barrier when household finances are already stretched.

03

Accessible support

People valued somewhere familiar and approachable where they could ask questions without embarrassment or judgement.

04

Building confidence

People want to understand, not simply be told what to do — shaping a practical, educational approach.
